CULTURE AND IDENTITY
WHAT MAKES NEW ZEALAND UNIQUE?
What we learnt -
We have our own unique identity as New Zealanders, so what is being kiwi really about?
After reading the non-fiction text 'Ask About Oceania New Zealand' we had a better understanding, so we created this presentation:
INTEGRATING ART
We learnt about the Koru. We also learnt about using colours effectively to create great art works.
The Koru shape is a scroll shape and is linked to the New Zealand fern plant. The shoot of the fern has a curled-over tip which unfurls and becomes a fern leaf.
The Koru reaches towards light, striving for perfection, encouraging new positive beginnings …
The Koru represents the unfolding of new life, that everything is reborn and continues. It represents renewal and hope for the future.

We enjoyed creating our art and it is displayed in the presentation below:

We have been improving our ICT skills. History, events and people have shaped and will continue to shape our culture.
We created graphic designs to reflect kiwiana. Our graphic designs are displayed in the presentation below:

PICTURE KEY
How does this picture relate to 'What Makes New Zealand Unique?'
- Maori people performing, possibly on a marae
- It reminds me of the All Blacks performing the haka
- It's about Maori culture and Maori people are one of the recognisable things about NZ
- Lots of NZ'ers do the haka, it's something special to NZ
- We perform waiata and haka to welcome people
- Sometimes we see waiata or haka performed at significant events (NZ soldier killed)
